Hmm,

I'm thinking of getting my own domain name for my website. Currently I'm just hosting off the free space provided by my old dial-up account.

The problem is that all the good names are taken. Usually taken, but not having anything done to them (which really pisses me off).

Any thoughts? What I'd like is either a .com or a .net, probably the .net would be better.

Most of the decent english words have been used, so I'm thinking of switching to a different language, probably Welsh or Latin.

Edit:
angelsden.net isn't taken.
veneficium.net (latin for magic) is available
cyfareddol.net (welsh for magic) is available

More thoughts when they come to hand.

Aj's likes K-mart.

Aj really likes K-mart when they have a 15% off everything sale, with no-deposit lay-by. K-mart had one of them about six weeks ago and Aj bought a lot.

Total of about $1250 worth of stuff, minus 15% discount means just over $1000. I paid the last of it off last night, and brought my new play toys home.

Lets see, I have:

  • Sony DVD Player (Yay! Aj own a DVD player!)

  • Panasonic Video Player(Need one in the front room)

  • Popcorn Maker (need to replace the one that Wayne broke)

  • Non-stick frying pan (old one died a while ago)

  • Electric Sander (It's one of those little B&D Mouse sanders. It sooo cute!)

  • Jumbo Bean Bag (A blue one, my favourite colour)

  • A professional Wok (Which was actually on a separate lay-by, and was picked up a long time ago and given to Mum as a present)

Of course, this means that Aj got to play with electrical toys last night. Aj had to make sure that everything worked!

Being K-mart, you don't get much technical advise on what they've got. So I bought quality names, and I think I got good machines. So I'm reading the instruction manual for the DVD player (Yes, I read instuctions.) and it says that there is a sticker on the back of the DVD player that says what Region it's limited to.

Bugger!

I look at the back of the DVD player, and sure enough, there's a little sticker with the Region 4 symbol on it.

Double bugger!

Oh well.

Ever the optimist, I put the Region 1 copy of The Labyrinth I'm currently borrowing from Stephen ([livejournal.com profile] nakedteddybears) in. It works. I put in Stephen's Region 1 copy of The Dark Crystal in. It works. I put in his Region 4 copy of Cats in. It works. I put in my Region 4 copy of The Mummy in. It works. I put in the Region 2 DVD sampler disk that came with the machine. It works.

I really think the people at Sony need to fix their documentation.

Both computers and now in the spare room, and the spare bed.

I had to move the bookcase from where I moved it last night so that the two tables would fit in. Not by much, only by about 5 cm, but that meant that I had to pull everything off it, move it those 5 cm, and then put everything back.

Considering the bottom two shelves are Encyclopedia Britannica and the year books from 1972 to 1984, and most of the rest are computer manuals and text books, that's a lot of work for an extra 5 cm.

Now, the only problem is I need another network cable, one that will reach from Dave to Halloran. Oh well, Dave will just be lonely until the end of the week then.

The rest of the house looks like a bomb has hit it, but you get that.

Also known widely as the Fire Bird, the phoenix is a profound symbol of the circle of life. It has a life cycle of 500 to 600 ears and after that amount of time, it sets itself on fire and dies in the flames. Then after three days, it rises again from the ashes. It is a completely benign creature who lives in dew. It is said that the phoenix has a beautiful melidous song which grows ever more mournful as its life comes to an end. It is a symbol of the sun and immortality. The phoenix is a very worthwhile beast.

Still cleaning, I picked up a used movie ticket up from under the bed.

In big letters was the word ADULT across the top.

My immediate thought was that it couldn't have been mine then.

Cleaning

Why is it after a huge job of cleaning up over the weekend that the house currently looks messier than ever?

(MusicMAX: Angels - Am I ever going to see your face again?)
In this case it's because most of the cleaning was in the part of the house that most people never see: The Spare Room!

I have done it. I went through ever single box in the spare room and threw out most of it. I think I've cut the amount of junk I have by at least half, plus I bit the bullet and moved my computer back out of my bedroom, and into the spare room.

(MusicMAX: Roxette - Listen to Your Heart)
I only did it last night, but already I feel a big difference in the house. Now, instead of just veging in front of the computer and TV like I used to do, I have to actually decide to sit in front of the computer. Feels a lot better over all.

Plus it's reminded me of something rather important, something that living with Wayne had caused me to forget. This is my house, and now without Wayne I can feel comfortable in all of it (long story).

However, I have one small problem. I've moved my main computer (Halloran Elder, the beast I'm currently sitting in front of) into here, and I want to move the secondary computer (David Majors Shardik, usually called Dave) in here as well. Plus the spare bed is also in here. The problem is thus: how am I going to fit everything in here, and still have enough room to be useful?

The easy answer is remove the spare bed, except for the fact that I want to leave the bed here for two reasons:

1) In case of guests, so there is somewhere private for them to sleep;
2) So that if I want to watch something on the computer, I have somewhere more comfortable than this chair to watch it on.

Hmmm... Needs thought. And tape-measure.

Oh, and that reminds me: Amaya, I went through the piles of miscellaneous computer crap that IT folk like me tend to collect, and sorted it into the working pile, and the dead pile. As a result I have a large box full of all sorts of dead computer gear, and you are more than welcome to come over one day and look through it and see if any of it would be useful to you.

I think I'll get back to the cleaning now.

I try and get rid of as much of it as possible by using SpamCop, but I still get heaps.

This seems to be a trend.

I intend to put something in my LJ, get distracted, and get around to it at least three or four days later.

Of course I can't remember what I was going to put on the LJ entry, but, you get that.

It's 12:30 in the morning, and I really should go to bed.

Drugs!

Jun. 30th, 2002 10:50 pm
halloranelder: (Default)
I've been on drugs for most of this week!

Woke up Sunday after the party feeling a little bit worse for wear. Since I didn't drink, that was a little bit odd. Didn't think much of it though.

Woke up Monday still feeling a little bit worse for wear, plus it felt as if something was caught in the back of my throat. Annoying, nothing more.

Got to work, and was riding the lift up to our floor, and I had a quick look in the mirror in the lift to see if I could see what was irritating me. I saw it! It wasn't so much as something caught in the back of the throat, as a problem with the back of the throat.

Can you say ulcer boys and girls? I thought you could.

About 7mil across at the back of the visible part of the throat, the sickly off white colour usually associated with pimples.

Eek!

I was intending to make an appointment with the doctor the next day anyway, as I was almost out of anti-inflammatories, so this just motivated me a little bit more.

Went to the Doctor, and he had a quick look.

The diagnosis? An ulcer that's gotten infected, and is now a mild case of tonsillitis as well. He gave me a new script for the anti-inflammatories and one for some anti-biotics.

So, for the past five days I have been on Augmentin Duo Forte (Take one tablet twice a day immediately before or with the first mouthful of food) as well as my usual Vioxx Tablets (Take one tablet daily with food as required).

Individually they can have a side-effect of mild nausea, together, and well I haven't been feeling all that crash hot since then.

However, I had my last of the anti-biotics this morning, so I should be feeling better as of tomorrow. I hope so.

And the ulcer looks like it's gone.
halloranelder: (Default)
Well, it's been over a week, and I've only gotten around to putting up stuff about the party now.

That says to me either one of two things. Either A) It was a great party and it's taken this long to recover; or B) It was a fairly forgettable party, and I've forgotten to write it up.

Unfortunately, it's B.

Mostly my fault. I forgot to put the invites out early enough so most people already had something on that night.

Oh well.

The people who did turn up:

  • Scott

  • Stephen

  • Will

  • Byron

  • Kevin

  • Kelly

  • Adam

  • Matt Black

  • Sue

  • Chakae and new bf Andrew

Tim and Susan rang and said they couldn't make it due to the fact they were house-sitting, and I knew Jason and Sean D wouldn't be able to make from emails earlier in the week.

Oh well. My birthday party should be better. 25th August.
halloranelder: (Default)
...it helps if you remember to invite people.

I'm having a party on Saturday night. No real reason, mainly just a large case of because.

The official excuse is that it's the shortest day of the year Saturday, which would make it also the longest night of the year, so that's a good enough excuse to have a party if ever there was one.

However with the Medieval Fayre, the flu and family I forget to send out the invites until yesterday morning. As a result a large email went to a lot of people at short notice.

Oh well, I'll be better organised for my Birthday party in August.

If you're a friend of mine and you haven't been invited to the party, consider yourself invited.

Duh!
halloranelder: (Default)
You know you've had a good weekend when it takes until Thursday to put the entry into your Live Journal.

Anyway, I wasn't exactly feeling the most happy of chappies when I got home from work on Friday. First day back at work after three days off with the flu meant I felt like doing something, but I knew that I wasn't actually up to anything.

Stephen ([livejournal.com profile] nakedteddybears) came over and ended up inviting me over to his place. So instead of sitting at my place feeling like doing something, I went over to his place, felt like I was doing something , but was actually doing nothing. It worked!

Things done at Stephen's place:

* Read the first two User Friendly books. The web site has the full archive, and is better.
* Had some burrito's
* Read most of Charles M Jones' first autobiography (called Chuck Amuck) A good read.
* Slept (a lot!)
* Went over the road to visit a friend for a couple of hours.

I ended up going home Saturday night/Sunday morning just after midnight when Scott went home after turning up at Stephen's place Saturday afternoon after work.

Sunday was mostly another do nothing day until the afternoon when I met up with my Mum, Dad and brother Glenn. Dad had a check-up the next day at the medical centre next to the hospital when he had the by-pass (if you didn't know, Dad had a quintuple (that's 5) heart by-pass about a month ago). Glenn decided to take a couple days off work and came down with them so we did the "family" thing.

So I met them at the Hotel (Albert on the Park in Spring Hill) and we walk down to the city.

We have dinner at about 6 at a gourmet burger restaurant in the city called The Parrot. I recommend it, it's good.

Then a movie. We all go see Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. I have to agree with an opinion I've heard from a number of sources and that it's better the second time around. You're able to ignore all the problems, and focus on the movie. It seems better that way.

We get out of the movie about 10. The street's are wet, as it's rained while we were in the movies. Not a problem. We start walking back to the hotel. As we cross King George Square it starts raining slightly again. We consider the option of taking a taxi back to the hotel, but Mum decides against it.

We cross the square, past the church and the Suncorp-Metway building, and start walking alongside the Roma Street Parklands, and it starts pissing down.

We got soaked.

We take shelter for about fifteen minutes in the entranceway to the Parklands, but Mum and Dad decide that it's not going to stop, so we continue walking in the rain.

The rain stops about half-way between when we took shelter and the hotel.

Mum and Dad go back to their Hotel Room and Glenn comes home with me to crash at my place.

I drop Glenn back at the hotel in the morning before I go to work, and then meet them back at the Hotel after work. Again we walk down to the city for dinner. This time we eat at the Pancake Manor on Charlotte Street. Afterwards we walk back to the Hotel via the Queen Street Mall and King George Square and we have a look at the cows!

Yes, you heard right, cows!

It seems one of the cancer foundations is doing a promo trying to raise awareness of the disease, and has had a large number of life-sized cow sculptures painted/decorated by artists. These cows are currently spread around Brisbane city until the end of this month. Interesting to look at.

Since there was no threat of rain this time, on the way down to the city, and on the way back up to the hotel we went via the Roma Street Parklands. I am definitely going to have to make time to go and visit the Parklands during the day. What I saw at night was very nice, and I'd like to explore more.

However, on the way back Glenn proved once and for all that he's related to Dad and myself. I have a very bad sense of humour, lots of bad puns and the like, something I get from my Father. Glenn doesn't usually get involved in our bad humour.

However, as we walking through the Parklands, just above Roma Street station Dad wondered aloud what it takes to get a job as a train driver. The obvious answer was "through training". However, I didn't say it. Glenn did.

Much as I hate to admit it, he's definitely my brother.

The three of them went back to St George Tuesday morning.

From doing the "famaly thang" I learnt three things:

1) He definitely my brother;
2) Dad is doing marvelously;
3) Mum has finally given up smoking for good!

All in all, a good (extended) weekend.

Hmm?

My computer hates me!

I have the flu.

It started Monday afternoon (public holiday here in Brisbane) with just a itchy throat, and the occasional sniffle. Woke up Tuesday morning with the full blown flu. (Side Note: Why is it that I wake up early with the flu, and yet on healthy days I have trouble waking up at all?)

Made three phone calls, firstly to work saying I can't make it, secondly to my physio canceling my appointment, and lastly to the gym canceling my personal training appoint that evening.

I then went back to bed.

On a good note, I did get a lot of cleaning done yesterday afternoon. Nothing better to do.

I went to bed about midnight, hoping to get some sleep. Got back up about one, and did some computer stuff for a while (Whirlpool is a fun way to waste time!) and then went back to bed about two. Got up to blow my nose about three, and went back to bed. Got up to blow my nose about four, and went back to bed. Got up to blow my nose about five, and went back to bed. Got up to blow my nose about six, and went back to bed. Got up to blow my nose about seven, and went back to bed. Got up to blow my nose about eight, and decided that there was no way I was going to work in my current state.

Another day lost, and I'm not that optimistic about going to work tomorrow.

I've already gone through two boxes of tissues, and am on to my third (don't have any more in the house that I remember, better do some shopping), and I've already dumped one garbage bag of used tissues (eww, gross!).

Excuse me universe, I'm not supposed to get sick, remember?

I think I'm just going to go off and sulk and watch some Buffy!

Stephen Lister ([livejournal.com profile] nakedteddybears) is an evil man.

It's only due to his Live Journal that I decided that I needed one myself.

Now, the question that comes to mind is: Why?

Why start up a Live Journal of my own?

Mainly because I'm always coming up with idea's, rants, observations, etc, and I feel like I need to share them. You can't do that in a private diary, because it's, well, private! I could have worked out my own site to do all this, but the Live Journal site makes it so much easier.

So there it goes: Welcome to the ramblings of a modern day mad man!

And I said that all without mentioning the word cathartic.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams that tie two hearts that will never die
And near the flames
The shadows play in the shape of the man’s desire

This desert rose
Whose shadow bears the secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume that would torture you more than this

And now she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing’s as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
The rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Whose shadow bears the secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume that would torture you more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of hidden hearts and souls
This desert flower
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of love
