Ponderings
May. 26th, 2011 11:20 amI've worked out the big problem I have is not with the move itself, it's with the packing. If the packing is done, the move is actually quite simple. Yes, it's big and it's annoying, but it's just people putting boxes and furniture into a truck, and the pulling them out of the truck again at the other end.
However, you've got to pull all the stuff out of the furniture and into boxes before they can do that, and that's the bit that stresses me.
I know what I want to get moved this Saturday, but moving it relies on the appropriate packing being done before that. Some will be tonight (I have an exercise class this evening, so won't be getting home until a bit later) and then the rest has to be done tomorrow night or it won't be done in time.
Anyone want to come over tomorrow night and help me pack, or at least provide moral support?

I've thought about it, and realised that whether or not I get enough people volunteering to help on Saturday it's going to be easier if I book professional movers anyway.
As a result I've booked MiniMovers (the only moving company I would recommend without hesitation) for this Saturday morning. The plan is to get as much of the non-essential stuff moved this weekend as possible. This means all the storage crates, all the furniture that isn't required over the following week, all the stuff in the garage out the back, that sort of thing.
I'm going to try and pack as much of my books (oh god, my books!) this week as I can, and get them over as well.
Travis and I will still be living at the old house for the following week, so I will be making sure I leave enough so the house is still liveable. However, the less remaining the better as it will result in less stress for both of us when we do the full move. It would probably end up being cheaper to move everyone on the one day (less travel time, etc), but considering how stressful the last move was, I'm willing to pay extra for less stress.
I'm planning on walking past the new house tonight so I can check on parking restrictions on Bell St. Knowing what the parking restrictions are before hand is a good idea. We sign the lease and get the keys tomorrow morning, and I'm planning on dropping in to the new place tomorrow after work with a tape measure (already in my bag) plus pencil and paper so I can work out room layouts. Thursday night I have an exercise class (one of the few things I haven't cancelled for the next few weeks), and because I was already going to have one of the Flexicars to get to the class, I've extended the booking to the next morning, so I have a car at my disposal for moving things around Thursday night.
Most of the rest of my free time will be packing boxes. The only things I haven't cancelled over the next few weeks are my exercise classes (they're good for me, so I really shouldn't cancel them), I've marked myself as available for my World of Warcraft Guild's raids for next Sunday and Monday night, and I've got a friends birthday to attend that I really want to go to. Other than that I've pulled out of everything I was doing until after Pheno.
I've booked a Flexicar from Friday night till Monday morning, and then again for the following weekend, so I have my own transport for the actual move. Not having your own transport makes this sort of thing exceedingly difficult.
So, I'm still perfectly willing to accept volunteers this Saturday and next Saturday, but have no need for anyone to volunteer if they aren't available/don't want to.
Overall I'm finding myself a hell of a lot less stressed than the last move. I've a better understanding of what I'm doing this time, plus I'm genuinely looking forward to the new house. Plus I think the knowledge that we're getting away from our current fuckwit landlord is helping considerably.
Getting there, slowly.

Houses, Dates and Moving
May. 23rd, 2011 03:15 pmWell, the dates are sorted.
Travis and I go in Wednesday morning (26th May) to sign the lease on the new place and get the keys. We've put in the notice to vacate the current place and the hand over date will be Monday the 6th of June.
Move is booked in for Saturday the 4th of June.
Travis has sorted the electricity, gas and water, while I've theoretically sorted the phone and internet (phone being a Telstra thing, that's why I've only theoretically sorted it). Internet is pencilled in as being connected on Monday the 6th, but may be a day or two depending on how much fiddling around they have to do with Telstra. We'll see.
We've got almost 2 weeks overlap with the two places. I'm intending to use this overlap to make the move as easy as possible. I'm planning to move a hell of a lot of my stuff this weekend, so we don't have to worry about it next weekend, and so that there's more room in the house to pack the rest of the stuff.
So, is anyone willing and able to help me this weekend? If I get enough people willing to help I'm going to hire a ute for the weekend, otherwise I will hire removalists. Most of what I want to move over this weekend is boxes and crates, very little furniture. Plus, most of it will be going into the bungalow out the back of the new place, so easy to deal with at the other end.
I remember a number of people have said they are willing to help. Anyone?
Enjoy

Tired Random is tired.
However, we have a new house to move into.
Travis got the phone call from the real estate agent this morning and went in and paid the bond. All that's left to do is sort out the dates we actually start the lease. The owners are currently living in the house, and need to sort out their move. I expect they'll be out by sometime next week, and we'll be moving in post haste.
It's a very nice house. The bad news is that it's more expensive than the current place. The good news is that's it's actually going to save me money.
Currently I'm paying for a storage unit for some stuff that I do not have the space for. The new house includes a bungalow out the back that should fit everything I've got in storage, and then some. The end result will be that I'll be saving a bit each month on what I'm currently spending, plus all my junk is within arms reach, so I can actually work on going through the stuff I have and gradually disposing of it.
Plus, the new house is closer to the city, and I think is generally nicer than any of the houses we've looked at (including the ones we've lived in).
I'll do another post shortly with some other details that I don't want in a public post.

Dreamwidth Seed Account Sale
May. 1st, 2011 05:55 pmThe Dreamwidth Seed account sale is currently on.
I missed the first batch of 100 accounts, and the second batch of 100 went on sale almost an hour ago. The third batch should go on sale at approximately 11:00pm Melbourne time, and the fourth (and last) batch should go on sale at about 5:00am tomorrow morning.
Seed accounts cost $200US, and are the equivalent of a premium account but are valid forever. A year of a Premium account costs $50US, so you pay for 4 years and never have to worry about it again.
Accounts are for sale here: http://www.dreamwidth.org/shop
Click on the appropriate link for who you want to buy the account for (Buy paid services for yourself/someone in your circle/a different account/a new account/a random user).
If there are any Seed accounts available, there will be an extra option under the standard options for the seed account.

Today we received in the mail the official notice from our fuckwit landlord/owner to vacate the premises at the end of the lease (July 1). The reason stated on the notice for requesting us to leave was that the owner of the house or close family relative would be moving in (one of the standard reasons allowed in Victorian law).
I'm not surprised, and actually believe it.
When we moved in, the lease stated that the property had already obtained planning approval for sub-division, with another house to be built on the back half of the block. The lease stated that the sub-division wasn't going to happen during the lease, but was likely afterwards.
Not long after we moved in the owner had a valuer from the bank come through and value the property, as he was intending to re-finance.
In January he put the house and the full block on the market. His original asking price was in the range of $700k - $770k, which in my mind was at least $100k above the actual value of the house. His angle was that he was trying to sell both houses, the one that was actually here and the one that had planning approval. Sell the dream, as it were.
No one was interested. His asking price dropped to $690k - $750k, and then dropped again to $675k - $725k, and still no one was interested. The Melbourne property market was in a slump, and the number of buyers was way down.
He took the house off the market end of March. About a week afterwards he got another bank valuer to look at the house, as he was trying to refinance to build the back house himself.
And then today we get the notice to vacate, with the reason as the owner or relative of the owner is intending to move in.
To me, that says the valuation was no where near what he wanted, and he's over-extended himself financially. I think that he and his new wife are going to move back in, meaning they don't have to deal with whatever house they are currently living in, in an attempt to save money, and maybe do the sub-division later.
Which is a real fucking shame, as I like this house. He's a fuckwit, but it's a nice house.
So, Travis and I start the house hunting again next week.
The one good thing is that he really wants to move in as soon as possible, so he's included a clause stating we can end the lease at any time prior to the end of the lease with 2 weeks notice. This means we can jump when we find a good place and not have to worry too much about juggling timing.
Oh well.

DW Seed Accounts
Apr. 7th, 2011 12:35 pmHmm...
According the the latest
dw_news post, they will most likely be doing another seed account sale April 30 - May 1, with 400 seed accounts selling for $200US in four batches of 100.
A seed account is a Premium Paid account that doesn't expire. A full year of a Premium Paid account is $50US, so a seed account costs the equivalent of 4 years.
I will most likely be getting a seed account, and then working out what to do with my almost a years worth of Premium Paid account I bought yesterday. Doh!

Oct. 9th, 2009 01:49 pmOr exceptionally cheap to a bad one.
I have too much stuff. Part of the process of deal with too much stuff is getting rid of the excess stuff. One of those things is a spare television.
It's a small 34cm CRT TV, with mono RCA inputs, and a set of rabbit ears (though I am missing the little thing that the rabbit ears use to connect to the antenna input of the TV).
Anyone want it? If no one claims it, I will be walking down to St Vinnies and donating it.

Yesterday when the alarm went off, I got up. Same with today.
Now that may not seem like much of an achievement, but for me it is.
Both days, today and yesterday, from the alarm going off until me getting into work was less than and hour and a half.
Previously it's usually in the range of two to three hours, and has been as long as five after a really bad night. The problem is that I don't sleep well with my back being as screwed up as it is. The usual reaction when the alarm goes off in the morning is for me to stagger over to the alarm clock, switch it over to the radio, and then go back to bed without actually waking up. I then wake up some time later, usually an hour or more later, wondering why the radio is on. I then realise I am awake, and get up.
I didn't like getting up yesterday or today (because this house is so bloody cold), but after a nice hot shower I was fine.
I think I'm finally going to beat this.

Jul. 18th, 2002 12:07 amI have a problem with making new friends.
For some reason, to talk to someone I don't know I need someone I do know there to act as a bridge. For instance, that's how I got involved with the Poker crowd.
Daniel and Tanya were going oversea's so they had a going away party. I knew a few other's there, like Tim, and some of the Toowoomba folk, so I was comfortable with situation. So I got to know, superficially at least, Will and Tom. That was about September 2000.
September 2001 Daniel and Tanya are back in the country for three weeks, and they have a homecoming/going away party, and again I run into Tom and Will and some of the others.
Tom, Will and I were the last to leave that event, at approximately eight o'clock the next morning, after the sun was already up. Will invited me to Poker, which usually happens at his place every Wednesday night, and that's how I became involved with them.
Every time there must be a link between me and the new person, otherwise I get frightened off.
And I've been doing it again on Live Journal.
I looked at my friends list on LJ and there were three people there. Stephen (
nakedteddybears), Maggie (
magdellin) and Amaya (
illidrinn). Three people I already know!
Ugg.
However, all is not lost.
A random stranger (
the_metatron) added me as a friend in his Live Journal, so it sort of pushed me to do something about it. I've added him to my friends (Hi) and another guy I came across who looked interesting (Hi Adam) and I've joined a few communities that look interesting.
So, perhaps I am salvageable.

Electrickery
Jul. 16th, 2002 11:33 pmToday was a very electrical day.
Firstly, the microwave I rent from Radio Rentals blew up on Friday night (lots of sparks coming from the control panel, and a really bad burning smell), so I rang Radio Rentals yesterday, and organised an exchange for this afternoon. So instead of a two year old microwave, I now have a new, better model. All good.
While waiting for the Radio Rentals guy to turn up, I check the mail, and the electricity bill from Energex is there. Eeek! Almost twice as much as the previous quarter. Of course I know what the culprit is... The Heaters! This means I have two options. Don't use the heaters anywhere near as much as I do, and freeze, but pay less in bills; Or expect a high electricity bill in Winter. I'll just expect the bill, I HATE winter.
Then I decided to pull apart my computer to see if there was any obvious reason as to why the two CD-ROM's in it were behaving erratically. In it I have a 52x reader that's about 18 months old, and a CDR/RW that's about four years old. The reader is currently refusing to read anything, and the CDR/RW doesn't read most disks that were created with CDR/RW drive.
As far as I am aware, when you shake a CD-ROM drive you are not supposed to hear what sounds like sand rattling inside the drive. Oh well, looks like the 52x is toast. Nothing seems visibly wrong with the CDR/RW, but it probably should be replaced as well.
Current plan is to get a DVD-ROM and a new CDR/RW, and put the old CDR/RW into the second machine, replacing the current hex speed CD-ROM (yes, you heard that right, six speed!).
I'm probably going to get the two drives from Computer Alliance, I've dealt with them through work before, and they've got an LG 32x/10x/40x CDR/RW for $129 and an LG 16x DVD for $125.
Probably pick them up tomorrow, and hopefully install them Thursday.
Now, I've just got to remember that when I've got the computer, TV and both heaters on, not to also use the frypan and the microwave at the same time.
Blew the fuse again, didn't I?

Another reason to love DVD's
Jul. 15th, 2002 12:59 amI sat down and watched The Mummy tonight, the only DVD that I actually own. I watched it through, it's a good move and I like it, and then I decided to have a look at the extra features on the disk.
It's the two disk special edition, but I've only looked at the first disk so far.
One of the special features on Disk 1 is an audio commentary by Brendan Fraser.
I like Brendan Fraser. He's a great actor, and he's cute too. He also has a great sense of humour, as shown by the audio commentary.
I select his audio commentary, and then play the movie again. Right from the start of the Universal Pictures Logo he's commenting.
I only watched a bit of it with his commentary, just up to when the cut to the Museum for the first time and we meet Eve, but the bits I watched were a combination of behind-the-scenes stuff, and humour.
Things like: "That's gotta hurt. Glad it's not me. Hang on, it is me, and that did hurt."
The only problem with now owning a DVD player? I gotta get me more DVD's!
It's the two disk special edition, but I've only looked at the first disk so far.
One of the special features on Disk 1 is an audio commentary by Brendan Fraser.

Batman Vs. Superman In 2004
Fans who worried that DC Comics' only response to Spider-Man would be "Wonder Twins" can rest a bit easier today. Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed recent reports that the block-buster crossover pic Batman Vs. Superman is, indeed on the fast-track and targeted for a 2004 release.
Wolfgang Petersen (The Perfect Storm), who has long been attached as director will also serve as producer on the movie.
"It is a clash of the titans," Petersen told Variety. "They play off of each other so perfectly. (Superman) is clear, bright, all that is noble and good, and Batman represents the dark, obsessive and vengeful side. They are two sides of the same coin and that is material for great drama."
Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven) wrote the script which has the two heroes starting as allies but eventually battling one-another.
"They both go through some kind of a crisis," Petersen said to The Reporter. "Superman has an unwavering belief in what is right and wrong and it's just not that simple anymore in today's world, while Batman is on a path of self-destruction. He reacts to an act of incredible violence in a way that almost puts him over the edge."
The director will be searching for his leading men immediately and hopes to have the roles filled within four weeks. "We are not going to go with typical action stars but great actors who will do an action-oriented part," Petersen told The Reporter. The director also states there are three juicy female parts in the film. Early 2003 is targeted as the start of production.
Both Gotham City and Metropolis will be featured in the movie.
Diana Rathbun will also produce. Warner Bros' president of worldwide production, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, will oversee the project with senior vice president Bob Brassel.
The crossover is not a continuation of previous the previous franchise. Nor does it replace stand-alone projects for the two characters. Development work continues on the Superman movie with director McG (Charlie's Angels) and writer J.J. Abrams (Alias). Similarly Batman: Year One is still in development with Darren Aronofsky.

Matt Damon is to star as Superman in the new movie in which the Man of Steel battles his one-time ally Batman.
Director Wolfgang Peterson said: "It is a clash of the titans. Everything after September 11 is different.
"You want to change the images of these superheroes."
Peterson, who directed Air Force One, said Superman would appear "clear, bright, all that is noble and good; Batman represents the dark, obsessive and vengeful side."

Thoughts, anyone?
It's midnight on a Saturday, and what am I doing? I am at home doing the dishes.
For some reason I find that disgusting.
Now, it's not that I don't have a life. The problem is that my life is generic. The only difference between my life and the lives of millions of other people out there, is that this life happens to me.
I'm finding the whole concept rather depressing.

Like a wound up spring...
Jul. 13th, 2002 11:21 pmHave you ever had the feeling that you want to do something, you just don't know what it is?
I get that feeling a lot, and I've got it now.
At the moment I'm puttering around the house, still doing the massive reorganization and cleaning effort. Current job is the dishes. But I'd rather be off doing something and the dishes ain't it.
On second thoughts, I think I know what it is. It's not so much that I want to do something, more that I want to do something with someone. I'm lonely, and I'm getting sick of it.
Anyone know of a single gay guy who'd be interested in me, and I'd be interested in them?
Please?

Anyone who looked at any of my entries in the last 24 hours or so would have seen that I put up a photo of me for my icon.
Anyone looking now will notice I've gone back to the smiley.
I hate looking at photo's of me. I can scrub up pretty well in real life when I want to, but put me in a photo and I look bloody ugly.
Bugger.
